The list of standards published in August 2026, released by UNINFO on 2 September, contains a single entry: UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 42001:2026, the national edition of the Standard on artificial intelligence management systems. The UNI catalogue entry sets out the coordinates: in force since 30 July 2026, available in Italian since 27 August, replacing UNI CEI ISO/IEC 42001:2024. The technical text remains the one organisations have known since 2023; what changes is the place of the standard within the standardisation system, and the difference is not one of designation alone.
The chain of adoption
The story can be read in two lines of the catalogue entry: the new edition «implements» EN ISO/IEC 42001:2026 and «adopts» ISO/IEC 42001:2023. At the base lies the international Standard on artificial intelligence management systems, developed by the joint subcommittee ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 and published in 2023. On 18 March 2026 came the European adoption, EN ISO/IEC 42001:2026, which this blog covered while underlining the limits of its relevance for the AI Act. The UNI CEI edition now closes the national link in the chain: within the European standardisation system, EN standards are meant to be implemented by national bodies as identical national standards, with the withdrawal of conflicting national ones, which is why the 2024 edition, which adopted the international Standard directly without passing through the European standard, leaves the catalogue. The entry also records the classification details: technical commission UNI/CT 533 and ICS codes 03.100.70, reserved for management systems, and 35.020, dedicated to information technology.
The content of the Standard
As to content, the catalogue entry describes a standard that specifies requirements and provides guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AI management system within the context of an organisation. The document is addressed to any organisation, regardless of size, type and nature, that provides or uses products or services relying on artificial intelligence systems, with the declared purpose of helping it develop, provide or use such systems responsibly. The acronym by which practice designates this management system is AIMS, Artificial Intelligence Management System; the structure is the harmonised structure of ISO management system standards, designed to integrate with the systems organisations already run, from quality to information security.
One clarification removes a recurring misunderstanding: the novelty of this edition is not the language. The Italian translation of the Standard had been available since January 2025, when UNI announced the publication in Italian of UNI CEI ISO/IEC 42001:2024. The novelty is the European route of the adoption, with what follows in terms of uniformity: the same standard, under the same EN designation, is set to enter the catalogues of the national standardisation bodies of the CEN and CENELEC member countries.
Accredited certification
On the conformity assessment side, the framework is already operational. On 18 March 2026, the same day as the European publication, Accredia announced the launch of accreditation for bodies certifying artificial intelligence management systems against the standard, governed by Technical Circular DC No 08/2026. How an AIMS certification scheme works, and what it does not promise, is something this blog has already examined. For organisations that are certified or seeking certification, the replacement of the edition brings a small but concrete task: mapping the references to UNI CEI ISO/IEC 42001:2024 in contracts, tender specifications, internal policies and certificates, and updating them to the new designation.
Critical remarks
The level that the Italian edition does not touch remains unchanged. Article 17 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the so-called AI Act, requires providers of high-risk artificial intelligence systems to put in place a quality management system, and that system does not coincide with the AIMS of the Standard. The candidate harmonised standard for that requirement is EN 18286, developed by the joint technical committee CEN-CLC/JTC 21, whose path towards publication this blog has followed. The citation of its reference in the Official Journal of the European Union, which alone triggers the presumption of conformity under Article 40, is still missing: a search on EUR-Lex carried out on 2 September 2026 returns no act citing EN 18286. Until then, no presumption operates: not for EN 18286, and not for 42001 in any of its three guises, international, European or national.
Conclusions
The Italian adoption closes the circle of designations and tidies the catalogue, but it does not move the boundary of regulatory compliance. Three tasks remain with organisations: updating documentary references to the new designation, keeping the voluntary management system and the quality management system of Article 17 distinct in their compliance maps, and watching the Official Journal of the European Union, where it will be decided when conformity with standards will also begin to count as a presumption.
